Proper garment care begins with carefully observing the labels, which indicate not only what the garment is made of, but also its composition and which washing rules should be followed.
Before considering the type of garments and their care, we must know the composition of the fabrics; something that is of vital importance for their conservation.
washing of fabrics according to their composition
- Polyester – Nylon
These synthetic fiber fabrics usually come mixed with natural fibers for longer life of the garment. They are very light, highly resistant, easy to wash and dry. They can be washed with warm water in the washing machine incorporating softener in the last rinse. Normally they do not require ironing and can be hung up immediately after washing; although if required, the iron can be used with a low temperature, for greater care of the garments.
- Cotton
Cotton has several special characteristics, despite being considered a very resistant fabric. If the fabric is 100% cotton, it can be washed in cold or hot water; caring for cotton garments requires that the temperature when washing them is not too high, as they can shrink and lose color. When the fabric is printed, it must be washed separately so as not to dye other fabrics and to ensure the colour fastness. If it comes with a mixture of other types of fibre, it should be ironed with the fabric wet or steamed.
- Silk
This fabric is very delicate, as it is very prone to odours and sweat, so it should be washed every time it is used, for proper care of the clothes; neither should it be washed with any detergent, but with water that is not very soapy for delicate fabrics, putting them in a place away from the sun. For better preservation, it should be protected from light and air.
- Jean or denim
This is a very strong and resistant cotton fabric, which has a very special characteristic and that is that, to manufacture a garment of excellent quality, the fabric must come with a pre-wash so that, with its continuous use, it does not tend to shrink and form stripes or marks after washing. For greater care of garments of this type, they should be washed inside out and ironed wet at a high temperature.
- Flax
Linen is a very resistant and fresh fabric, which is generally used in very hot climates due to its great capacity to absorb humidity. It is composed of different spinning techniques, so that a very thick or thin fabric can be obtained. To care for garments made of this material, you can use the washing machine with hot water and spin, applying a little starch to the water to avoid its tendency to crease and ironing should be done with the fabric wet.
- Wool
It is a natural fabric whose care of the garments, should be from washing to ironing, since this material can deform, lose its color or stick to a very hot temperature with the iron. When washing wool garments, the temperature can be cold or warm and a few drops of vinegar are added to fix the colour and leave the garment softer; then it is spread out on a flat surface, without hanging the garment out to dry. Always iron at a low temperature and with a clean cloth; never directly on the fabric.
- Acrylic
Among the acrylics, Spandex stands out as a synthetic fiber with great elasticity, widely used in sportswear. Garments made of this type of material can be washed or dry-cleaned, as they tend to absorb odours too much. If they are to be tumble-dried, softener should be used as the last washing step. For the best care of garments that are synthetic, the ideal is to hang them up and then fold them; generally they do not require ironing.
- Pana
This type of fabric can be cotton, viscose, or polyester-cotton blend. Washing corduroy fabrics with a cotton-only composition should be done in a specific way and inside out to preserve the hair. If it is a mixture of materials, the care of clothes goes from using a washing program for delicate clothes, to wet ironing and inside out, so as not to remove the shine and maintain their texture.
